From it's ancient Greek origins, the word "mentor" has come to mean "friend", "trusted advisor" and "wise counsellor". As a a result, the whole process for mentoring others in organisations should ideally reflect these same characteristics, skills and behaviours. However, our fast changing and time starved organisations of today do not have the luxury of merely waiting for the mentor/mentee relationship to "naturally" grow. Instead, this climate needs to be created and a degree of formality and structure introduced. |
